Seeing the northern lights during a low KP index is challenging but not impossible. The KP index measures geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 to 9, with higher numbers indicating stronger auroras visible at lower latitudes. When the KP index is low, your best chance to view the aurora borealis is by heading to locations with the darkest skies and minimal light pollution, ideally within or near the auroral oval, which typically includes high-latitude regions like Northern Scandinavia, Iceland, Alaska, and parts of Canada.

Understanding the KP Index

The KP index is a global geomagnetic storm index with a scale of 0 to 9, where 0 indicates very little geomagnetic activity and 9 represents major geomagnetic storms. A low KP index, generally between 0 and 2, means the auroras are likely confined to high latitudes. However, you can still optimize your chances by understanding and utilizing other factors that contribute to aurora visibility.

What Kp do you actually need?

Kp runs 0–9, and the higher it climbs the further from the pole the auroral oval stretches. So the number you need is not universal — it depends entirely on where you stand. Every destination we track carries its own threshold, derived from its geomagnetic latitude: the Kp at which the oval reaches roughly overhead. It is a floor, not a target — a place that needs Kp 1 also sees the lights at Kp 5, and sees them more often than anywhere further south.
